How to Find That Book You've Spent Years Looking For

Article Tools

Searching for a book you remember reading as a child, college student, or happy dropout, but haven't seen anywhere since? On the Web, there are now numerous ways to expand your hunt beyond Amazon. Abebooks (www.abebooks.com) is a consortium that connects you to thousands of used-book stores around the world. Another search site is the Berkeley-based Bookfinder.com. You can also search a growing number of individual stores online, including the Portland-based Powells (www.powells.com) and Bolerium Books in San Francisco (www.bolerium.com), which specializes in rare books on labor issues and radical history.

Meanwhile, your local library can be a great help, too, thanks to a practice called interlibrary loan. Libraries across the country will lend you books and other materials, creating a vast collection that's easy for you to access. Here's how: If you don't find what you're looking for in your library's catalog, ask a librarian to locate it elsewhere in the huge national loan network. Tell the pros as much about the book as you can. Title and author are most important, but publisher and publication date (or even a good guess at it) can be helpful too. They'll do the rest.

The book I am looking for is about a girl who lives with her father and they move around alot. The father had always told her that her mother was dead. He finally tells her that he kidnapped her when she was little and her mother is alive. A reunion eventually happens between the girl and her mother and her mother's family. I read this around 1985.

I am looking for a children's book about a young boy who makes a purple concoction that cats like and he ends up selling it door to door or something like that. I read it in the early to mid 70's but it could be older.

    Hello from Texas!
I'm trying to locate a book I read in the mid or late 70's. I think it was book about Casper but it could have been another ghost. There were three ghosts all together, I believe, and it had robbers in it. The book was purple and that's about all I can remember. I would like to try and find this book online but I haven't had much luck. I'm hoping you can help! I don't think it's 'Georgie and the Robbers', the cover and storyline just don't match what I remember.
    Thanks!

I'm looking for a book I read maybe 20 years ago , I only remember it was about pirates and the name of the book was one word ( maybe the name of the ship ) and it may have started with the letter J. I know it's not much to go on but if you know anything even close... Thank-you, Billy

I am trying to find a childrens book I loved as a kid. It would have been published somewhere between 1970-1981. It is about two "people" who build a home out of materials they find in the rubbish tip. One wears a cap and the other has a blue and white stripped top. The two things I remember most (aside from the great artwork) was they build an organ from pipes they find, and at the end their home is going to be destroyed. They escape with three pieces of board (all that is left) and a tin of nails, by building a stairway up.
I don't know who wrote or illistrated it, or even what it is called, but I have been trying for the last couple of years to remember what it is called and find a copy of it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Stuart

Jolie: Thanks so much! I was drawing a complete blank. Oddly enough, I have been trying to thrift/used bookstore a copy of Jumper, because it had been 6 years or so since I read it, and it was always one of my favorites. Happy hunting.

Travis -- I know that book! It's "Wildside" by Stephen Gould, who also wrote "Jumper" and several other really good YA-ish novels. It's a personal favorite. :)

    Aloha

About twenty eight years ago I borrowed a book from a friend and somebody borrowed the book from me, but didn't return it. I would like to replace the book and have a copy for myself also, but I don't know the name of the book or the author. I've searched and googled, but can't find it anywhere.

Here are the clues: The book was about perception, possibly more about the physical aspects than the mental. It was published about 1980 or earlier by a university press. I don't know if there was a single author.

"Through the Mind's Eye' is the closest I can get to remembering the title, but that is a book about religion and/or philosophy by Ralph Lewis.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Tom Powell

I read a non fiction book 20-30 years ago about a homesteading family in Canada that had a pet goat named Annabelle. Anybody ever hear of it? Thanks.

I'm looking for a book I read about 10 or 15 years ago that takes place in heaven. It's a mystery about a murder/death of an angel. I believe there is a trial, Lucifer, Metatron.

Has anyone any idea what the title of this book may be?

    Thank you in advance!

I am looking for a book that I read back around 1992 about a boy and a girl that were trapped in the basement of an old theatre or something to that effect. They were trapped due to a war(I believe) and when they got out decided that there best bet for survival was a trek across the country. The book was a series, this being the set up for the first. I was about 12 when I read it and can't for the life of me remember anything about it except the story had caught my attention back then and I moved out of town before getting the opportunity to finish it. Any help would be appreciated.

I read a book in 2006, and I cannot remember the title. I'm going nuts trying to figure it out. It was about a man attending his college reunion only to discover that all his friends had grown up, and he hadn't. He wants to binge drink, but they are all more responsible and have kids and/or wives. He realizes that he has a pretty severe drinking problem and the book details his recovery. Please someone help.
    Thanks!!!!!!
